Information technology is an exciting and ever-evolving field. What was a hot skill to have just a few years ago can be majorly out of date today. With huge advancements in artificial intelligence and augmented reality, the industry is shifting again. So what are the hottest skills in IT this year? If you want to cultivate a new skill to help yourself find a great new job this year, focus on the areas we suggest here.

1. Neural Networks. You have certainly seen some of the neural networks that have taken the internet by storm over the last few years. There’s Insprirobot, creating motivational posters. There was the neural network whose sole job was to name Guinea pigs. And don’t forget the one that wrote an entire chapter of a Harry Potter But neural networks do so much more and this kind of technology-based adaptive learning will have big implications in the industry. Starting out with a degree in computer science will be the best way to pursue this career.

2. Information Security. The internet has changed everything about the way we communicate with one another. But this also means it changed the way we communicate with big businesses all around the world. And how those businesses communicate with one another through the internet as well. This means the data that is exchanged needs to stay safe on both small and large scales. There will never not be a need for someone with an infosec background.
3. Project Management. This job within the IT industry can mean a lot of things. But ultimately, project management is about more than simply coding or hardware repair. Ultimately, a good project manager has the right soft skills to properly communicate with people at all levels and good interpersonal skills to be the liaison between the tech team and the other people affected by the project.

4. Chef Software. You might think this is all about working in a kitchen but Chef refers to a method of software programming that’s become very popular in the technology community. In this case, the user creates “recipes” that are configured together to create a “cookbook” which will run the server applications and utilities. There are other related languages that would be helpful to know, such as Hadoop, when working with Chef Software.

5. Ethereum Open Software. If you’ve heard of Bitcoin then you’ve heard of Blockchain. And if you’ve heard of Blockchain, you probably want to know more about Ethereum. This method of mining cryptocurrency is an open source distributed computing platform and operating system. But there is more to ethereum than just mining cryptocurrency. It may have long-term implications for things such as finance, internet-of-things, the potential for electricity sourcing and pricing. Someone with experience in Ethereum may be highly sought after in the tech community.
